2026 MCBA Prize Juror Bio: Inge Bruggeman
Inge Bruggeman is Executive Director of the CODEX Foundation in Berkeley, California, where she also teaches a course at UC Berkeley on the history of the printed book in The Bancroft Library’s historic press room. An artist herself, Inge makes artists’ books and text-based artwork, as well as fine press artists’ books that she publishes under her imprint INK-A! Press. These later works feature poetry and texts by other writers.
Her work is collected and exhibited internationally and supported by numerous grants and awards, including the Lia Libros de Artistas International Artist’s Book Prize in Guadalajara, the Leslie Durst Individual Artist Fellowship, an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission, and she was herself a finalist and semi-finalist for the MCBA International Artist’s Book Prize. Inge is the recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Alumna Award from her graduate program at the University of Alabama Book Arts Program. Before moving to Berkeley, Inge taught for over 25 years at UC Santa Barbara, Oregon College of Art & Craft, Columbia College Chicago, and ended her academic career as a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she directed the activities of the Black Rock Press and was Area Head of the Book Arts Program. While living in Portland, Oregon, Inge ran Textura: Book Arts & Letterpress Printing for 10 years. The business allowed her to collaborate with a wide variety of local and national artists, poets, publishers, and designers to help them create limited edition books and ephemera, including projects with Rainmaker Editions and Granary Books.
