Artist Statement:

In the beginning there was a whim and a wish from which all forms arose…

Flame in the Lotus explores interlacing and overlapping translucent images. Turning the pages of the book at once obscures and reveals an animated story of Creation.

This body of work is inspired by The Book of Hours of Catherine of Cleves and Carl Jung’s investigations chronicled in his Red Book . Each page is a record, a prayer, an examination of devotion and the mystery of self inquiry.

Here in handwork and the physical weight of beauty this object is my discovery, an opening, seen and unspoken, feeling into a way of knowing the elemental images of growth and transformation.

Flame in the Lotus contains 9 hand embroidered and beaded tulle pages in a book faced on each end with a fabric assemblage quilt. Soft pages lay against the crystalline hardness of a beaded cover strategically formed of geometric patterns purporting an underlying order.
