A 360-degree pop-up carousel book. Text, illustrations, binding and sculptural spine by the artist. As the whole structure is hollow it weights only a few ounces. It has taken over one hundred and fifty hours to make this piece, starting with the pop-up pages then the cover; finally the sculptural spine is made separately and then attached to the body of the book in sections. The sculptural clasp fastens the book in both the closed and open positions.
The pages have no folds – paper dovetails and interlocking joints join all the sections. Brilliant colors are achieved by using industrial textile dyes on Saunders Waterford watercolor paper. Pen work, watercolor washes and gold inlays complete the designs. Inspiration comes from medieval European religious art, the art of South East Asia and the buildings of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi.
