Front board only, picturing a Mercury capsule targeted on the Soviet Sputnik satellite , and constellation images of the US eagle staring down the Soviet bear. Orange inlaid circles and sprinkled gold leaf represent stars and other celestial bodies.

Artist Statement:

Full goatskin fine binding sewn on flattened cords with laced-in boards. Edge-to-edge goatskin doublures, suede flyleaves. Backpared and cushioned onlays of goatskin, some laser-printed; some areas sprinkled with gold leaf. Graphite and gold-sprinkled edges, hand sewn silk headbands.

Design inspired by Wolfe’s notion of single combat warriors battling the Cold War in the heavens on behalf of the US and USSR. Further inspiration and color pallete from space-themed advertising of the era.

Various patriotic and space race icons from the US and USSR are portrayed as mythological constellation forms, planets and spacecraft.
